This traditional weather forecasting instrument originated at the beginning of the 17th century and is still relevant today. When air pressure is high (good weather) the water level in the spout is low and when air pressure is low (bad weather) the water level rises. When a thunderstorm is in the air the water rises up the spout and drips out.
